The history of Marfre, Tadcaster.

Fancy a home with a bit a of history?  We think there’s something so special about a property which has remained in the same family all its life. For the first time in history Wishart Estate Agents are delighted to have been asked to offer Marfre, Golf Links, Tadcaster to the open market.

We’ve been lucky enough to be treated to a snippet of history dating back to the 1930s which we’re excited to share with all of the viewers at our open event on 20th May.

The history of Marfre, Tadcaster.

'Built by Messrs Brayshaw Bros in the 1930s, the new house was bought by Billie and Bessie Marston  (née Freer hence “Marfre”). Billie, who became Head Joiner at John Smith’s Brewery, designed and built on two magnificent bow windows to the lounge and dining room. Billie died in the 1980’s and Bessie died in 2001 at the age of 89, passing the house onto her two nieces. One niece and her husband  decided to buy the house and it became their second home.

Later in 2010 they commissioned an extensive project to extend the house using a local architect, builder and interior designer. The extension sympathetically retained architectural themes of the original house, replacing the aging bow windows, retaining the other awning window detail and matched the existing brickwork and pointing. The kitchen was tripled in size, and the lounge and master bedroom extended by 50%. All window frames were replaced and the original leaded light was refurbished and encapsulated. A new garage/garden room was installed at the same time to replace Uncle Billie’s extensive old garage and carpentry workshop. The house and garden had been transformed into the spacious and comfortable home that you see today.'
