Tadcaster: the picturesque market town in a prime location

Wishart Estate Agents decided to include Tadcaster in their sales portfolio for numerous reasons, but first and foremost because of its popular location, beautiful scenery and fascinating history, which is steeped in tradition.

Tadcaster [Calcaria] is well known across the UK for its Roman foundations, rich limestone (of which contributed towards the building of our very own York Minster!) and long brewing history.

With a population of circa. 6,000, Tadcaster is divided into East and West with the magnificent River Wharfe running directly through the centre of the town. Residents from both sides utilise the historic bridge dating from 1700, and which was rebuilt and widened in 2016.

Tadcaster is home to three successful breweries that employ many of the local residents: John Smith’s, Samuel Smith’s and The Tower Brewery. Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery is the oldest brewery in Yorkshire (and also probably the cheapest, with a pint of Taddy Lager likely to cost you less than £2.50) and it still uses the beautiful draft horses to deliver kegs of beer via horse and cart through the town each week. Breathe in the Tadcaster air and you will receive the familiar and comforting smell of freshly brewed hops.

For potential buyers considering Tadcaster as an option in today’s market, the town offers some impressive properties, both old and new, at very desirable prices for its prime location. It has three lovely primary schools and a well-regarded secondary school, its amenities are excellent, including: a thriving high street with locally run shops, bars, pubs and eateries, a swimming pool and leisure centre, a friendly medical centre, excellent supermarket, community library, Tadcaster Albion Football club and Tadcaster Magnets, a popular sports and social club. The town is served by a regular local bus service that runs from Leeds through to York and the Yorkshire Coast. Tadcaster also has the picturesque St Mary’s church which is located on the banks of the River Wharfe, overlooking the stunning viaduct.

Tadcaster is just 10 miles south-west of York and 12 miles north-east of Leeds; great for commuting and recreational links for all the family.
