10 things to do in and around York & Tadcaster this bank holiday weekend

  1. Askham Bryan Wildlife Park

Only open on weekends and holidays, the park is well cared for by the agricultural collage. From an internal reptile and insect area to the vast open air animal park itself, this is an ideal day out for all ages. There’s plenty of parking, a small café and a play park on site as well.

  1. Ye Old Sun Inn, Colton

How you travel there is completely up to you, but this makes for a great end point for a bike ride or walk from any of the local villages. The Sun Inn has stood the test of time with owners Ashley and Kelly always offering something new, a traditional home-cooked meal, delicious cocktails, a cuppa and a slice of cake, the on-site Fairfax gin distillery or Ashley’s handmade chocolates and now a fabulous brunch menu. Highly recommended.

  1. Bluebell Wood, Bilbrough

A top-secret location, but one you won’t forget in a hurry! Take a walk around the edge of the private woods to see a vast display of beautiful bluebells. While entry to the woods is strictly prohibited, you can see just as much from the edge. Follow the public footpath that begins at Bilbrough Church.

  1. Time for coffee

YO23 is bursting with a whole host of local coffee shops and independent cafes, such as But First in Bishopthorpe, Little Acorns in Copmanthorpe, Phil Ya Boots in Woodthorpe and the highly regarded Pig & Pastry on Bishopthorpe Road.

  1. For the cyclists

Cycle the scenic solar system route on the York to Riccall cycle track or take in the round loop tour of Askham Bryan, Helaugh, Wighill, Tadcaster, Oxton, Bolton Percy, Colton and Bilbrough. There are plenty of public houses to visit for refreshments and lunch along the way!

  1. York Marina, Naburn

Take in views of the boats sailing passed while enjoying a drink or meal from The Waterfront restaurant at York Marina. There’s also the McArtherGlen York Designer Outlet as your heading back out of Naburn - the perfect place for food, shopping and a children’s play park.

  1. Tadcaster Swimming Pool

Lane swimming, inflatable fun or public swim are all available in the large and small pool at Tadcaster. This charity-run organisation is always spotlessly clean and caters for all ages and abilities.

  1. Boston Spa

Head over to Boston Spa to enjoy a walk along the river and visit the many different boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. The Stable Lane community park is beautiful to walk around and they’ve just upgraded the play equipment to appeal to the older kids too.

  1. Piglets Adventure Farm, Strensall

One for the families - there’s so much going on here you really could stay all day!

  1. Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens

A firm favourite with the locals is this tranquil spot with a country house, café, shop, stunning gardens and gallery. The house is currently undergoing some conservation work but the external areas alone, are well worth a visit.
