Drome Road takes its name from the aerodrome that once stood here during the First World War. It was home to 57 Squadron, formed in 1916 after the Zeppelin raid on York.

Today, a memorial to 57 Squadron can be found in St Giles’ Church, honouring those who served and lost their lives.

We have lived in Copmanthorpe for 25 years. Our children grew up here, and throughout that time we worked in Leeds and York, both so easy to reach from the village.

What we’ve loved most is the balance: the rural nature of Copmanthorpe, while being so close to York. It’s only a half-hour bike ride along country lanes and tracks into the city.

The village itself has everything you need within walking distance. Our children could walk to school and to see friends, and we’ve always appreciated having the library, doctor, dentist, post office, everyday shopping, and plenty of small businesses right on the doorstep. There are also sociable clubs and events for all ages, making it easy to get involved and meet people.

One project I was involved in was helping at the library with a community display and inviting local groups to create banners about their activities. We were amazed to discover more than 50 groups in the village, from table tennis to model railways, playgroups to classic film clubs.

Copmanthorpe has always felt safe and peaceful, surrounded by open countryside. It has been a wonderful place to raise a family and a lovely place to come home to.
