Happy 10 Year Work Anniversary Christine Wishart!
Starting a new career is challenging at any age, but for my mum, it meant completely reinventing herself after 50—a huge leap that took courage, resilience, and determination. When I set up Wishart Estate Agents in 2013, once the business had found its footing, there was only one person I knew I wanted by my side: my mum.
Looking back, I remember the months leading up to that decision vividly. I had moved back home to launch the business, and during that time, I would drive my mum to and from her job in York. One particular day stands out to me; I picked her up, and she was visibly upset. She’d had a hard day at work, and the industry she’d dedicated years to had changed dramatically. Having endured so much throughout her career in the railway industry, it was clear to both of us that perhaps it was time for a new beginning.
I told her there and then, “Go in tomorrow, hand in your notice, and join me at Wishart Estate Agents.” It was a daunting prospect for both of us. It doubled our team overnight—a big step for a young business—but we took that step together, and we haven’t looked back since.
Watching my mum grow and develop her confidence in this new career has been one of the proudest experiences of my life. She started out so unsure, reluctant even to answer the phone for fear of saying the wrong thing. But today, she’s a skilled and respected agent, having successfully valued and sold hundreds of homes across York and Tadcaster. I suggested she become formally qualified, knowing she was already doing the job exceptionally well. Despite her worries about taking exams after so many years, she took the challenge head-on and passed with flying colours, becoming a qualified estate agent and a member of the NAEA.
As a business owner and a new mother myself, her support and guidance mean everything to me. She keeps me grounded and is the steady hand I rely on during the more demanding days, both in work and in life. Her empathy and wisdom are the foundation I lean on, and I’m so grateful to have her not only as my colleague but as my mother.
My mum isn’t just a colleague; she’s the heart of our team, an incredible nana to my boys, and truly the glue that holds our family together. Her selflessness and genuine care extend beyond our family to our clients and work family. I couldn’t imagine running this business without her—she’s undoubtedly the best business decision I’ve ever made.
……and no mam, you’re not retiring now, so don’t even ask! We’ve still got more homes to sell, memories to make, and a whole lot more to accomplish together. Happy 10 Year work anniversary, we love you! x
